Have you ever heard about a village called Cefalù? If not, we are talking about one of those stunning place to visit in Sicily. So if you are thinking to go to see the wonders of the Mediterranean during your next holiday, you can definitely not lose it.
Cefalù in fact is loved by tourists. We could say that in spite of and thanks to its size: 65 km2 and population of less than 14,000. Good things come in small packages, aren’t they? Well, this little town worths a visit. Located on the northern coast, Cefalù – in the province of Palermo – is perfectly suited to slow walking through, with the centre based between a sandy beach and a lofty and precipitous rock.
This medieval town has narrow street, paved with pebbles of the beach and the limestone of the rock. It is a walled city, where walls surrounding the old centre are still partially incorporated in some houses. At the same time there are shops and other commercial activities now, building a nice and comfy contrast that you can experience walking around the city centre.
Here it is possible to admire one of the large Christ Pantocrator built in a lovely mosaic with real gold – the other ones suit the apses of the Palatine Chapel of Palermo, of the Monreale and Messina’s Cathedrals. Remarkably fine specimens of the Byzantine art, these mosaics are situated into the Cathedral which dominates the whole city centre and is absolutely noteworthy.
Cefalù offers other significant sights – like the cloister of the Cathedral, the Seminary and the Bishops Palace, Osterio Magno, the Ancient Roman baths and Palazzo Piraino. But this delicious town is known for its closeness to spectacular places too. As a matter of fact not far from Cefalù is the sanctuary of Gibilmanna – 15,3 km – or Castelbuono – 23 km – another delight town which worths a visit if you are thinking to go to Sicily or the majestic Madonie Regional Natural Park – 45 km – for trekking lovers.
Cefalù offers indeed a dreamy scenery for everyone, as Palermo, Catania or Taormina do, where you can also enjoy a romantic dinner on a terrace overlooking the stunning sicilian sea.
