Already tired of the rainy-cold British autumn? Why not visit Sicily and its events: the next two months are full of things to do, to see and to eat!
With the help of a mild climate, low season prices and high quality wines, Sicily is considered to be one of the most convenient autumn destinations.
Each region of the island has its own special events that reflect the local traditions. We wanted to pick some of them and list the most important on this post:
- ChocoModica: for those in love with the black gold – chocolate – this is an event you can’t really miss! It takes place in Modica, near Catania, from the 5th to the 8th of December. The event – held in the main square of the town – is made of four thematic sections.
One with all the brands offering little bites of their chocolatey products; an educational section with free workshops on how to prepare chocolate and history of chocolate;
the entertaining section with games and shows to entertain every customer;
the special event section with guests and other activities;
- PopUp Market, in Catania, is known as one of the most eclectic events for alternative shopping – it can be considered as a container of excellences for the made in Sicily. Here young designers, indie & vintage stylists, craftsmen and recylclers create unique and afforable pieces of design like clothes, books, illustrations, accessories, modern antiques etc. As the ideal place for special souvenirs, it takes place every now and then in different locations. Next pop-up is on Halloween and the 1st of November.
- In Western Sicily – Caltavuturo, a small medieval village in the Madonie Mountains, near Palermo – happens the Fungo Ferla Fest. During the week-end of the 15th of November, the village transforms into the capital of autumn flavors because of the Ferla. It’s a type of mushroom growing near wild plants of fennel, only in this area of Sicily – therefore it’s a very unique flavor not enjoyable elsewhere! During the feast it is possible to enjoy numerous recipes with the local mushroom, visits to the medieval town and hiking tours in the surrounding woods, in search of the Ferla.
- Another important event is the historical re-enactment happening on next 9th of November called Trapani Medievale.
The show begins with the arrival of a medieval sailing ship at the port of Trapani and follows towards the city centre with a series of medieval Sicilian performances and a final banquet in the main square.
Performances will include sbandieratori, representations of medieval scenes and a huge royal procession. It is a must if you are a fan of Templar knights and medieval history!
Just four events? These are, according to us, some you can’t miss if you are visiting Sicily in this autumn, but there are surely some more occasions to enjoy your holiday in the Mediterranean!
